jCMDB is an Asset and Configuration Management plug-in which is fully ITIL (IT Infrastructure Library - IT Service Management best practice) compatible.

jCMDB is designed to work on the building blocks of Jira, so it is naturally integrated with Jira’s capabilities. We call it “jCMDB is born in Jira!” so it’s totally native.

Configuring jCMDB

Create a CMDB Project

Firstly, you need to create a JIRA Project to store your CIs (Configuration Items or Assets).

After clicking Create project button, you need to select jCMDB as your project blueprint.

In the next screen, you can click the select button.

This screen is used to give a name to your Asset Database, you can give it any name and key for your project.

 Create Your CIs

When you click the Submit button, your asset project will be ready for creating your assets.

If you click Create button from header navigation, you will see issue create screen each Jira issue means a CI (Configuration Item) or Asset. Also, your CI type is an issue type. You can start with by choosing your CI type.

There is are lots of pre-configured fields for you , if you like you may customize your fields from JIRA’s administration screens.

From Create Issue screen, you need to fill the required fields and then you can click Create button. JIRA will create your first CI or asset for you in your jCMDB project.

This is your first CI / Asset record, it’s a JIRA issue in practice. Then we created another CI record in our CMDB database. Now, we have 2 CI (configuration Configuration Item) records.

Asset Relationship

From one of the issues, you may click the MORE button which is located next to Assign button. There will be a list, you will see an option named as “Link”. By clicking the “Link” button, you may create relations between your CIs or assets.

There are different link type options in on this screen. After selecting your CI (Issue in Jira world) and link type (labeled as This Issue), you can click the Link button to create any relation.

Now, you can see a relation graph at the right bottom of the screen and you can click the “Show bigger” link. That link will open up bigger version of the relation graph which is capable of showing second level relations.

Adding More Asset Types

With the Add Issue Type button, you can create your new custom CI (Configuration Item) types.

Customizing Asset Statuses

You may also add new statuses to your workflow and add different workflows to your various types of CIs. https://confluence.atlassian.com/display/AdminJIRAServer072/Working+with+workflows

You can add new statuses for your CIs by clicking the “Add Status” button.

Adding New Attributes to CIs

As we showed in previous screenshots there is are lots of preconfigured fields which that are ready for use. Of course, you can add more fields to your CIs (Configuration Items) from Jira’s administration pages. https://confluence.atlassian.com/display/AdminJIRAServer071/Adding+a+custom+field

From Custom Fields administration page, you may create new fields with the “Add custom field” button.

In your CI view, there are different types which that categorize your fields.

Export & Import CIs

From Issue search screen, you can export your CI’s in CSV format with all fields included.

Firstly, you need to open the External System Import page from System Administration and then select CSV badge on this page.

Then you need to select your jCMDB project to import your assets. After selecting your project you’ll map your fields to the project’s fields in on the next screen.

After the mapping process, you can start to import your projects by clicking the Begin Import button in on the next screen.

Then JIRA will import your CIs (Configuration Items) to your CMDB project.
